MODULE 2

Music and movement methods

Activities based on needs analysis

In this section you can find ideas about different kinds of creative activities that can be used to identify the needs of the target group. Since a lot of existing literature is focused on traditional methods for data collecting, we will focus on more creative ways which actively involve youth in the process.

Creative methods are a valuable tool for working with diverse target groups. For example, visual methods and spatial positioning techniques can be especially helpful for individuals who experience difficulties in verbally expressing their needs. When applied in a safe and supportive environment, creative methods encourage spontaneous and authentic self-expression.

When assessing the needs of young people, it is essential to proceed with care, using gender-sensitive and inclusive language. Ensure that a safe space is created where individuals can express their needs and opinions freely, supported by a clear zero-tolerance policy for hate speech.

When preparing activities and setting up the space, it is important to get to know the group members so that potential adjustments can be made:

  • Space adjustments – Is the space accessible for people with disabilities? Is it sensory-neutral? Is it safe and comfortable?
  • Method adjustments – Can everyone verbalise their needs? Does someone express themselves more easily in writing or through another creative method? Is an interpreter required? Does anyone need additional support to participate?

Content adjustments – Are the topics presented in a clear and accessible way, taking into account cultural identity and context?
