Glossary
Inclusion
A process of ensuring that all individuals are treated equitably and have equal opportunities to participate fully, regardless of their background, abilities, or circumstances. It involves creating environments where diversity is respected and everyone can develop their potential.
Young People with Fewer Opportunities (YPWFO)
Young people who face economic, social, cultural, geographical, health, or educational barriers that limit their access to opportunities, including those with disabilities, migrant or refugee backgrounds, or those living in rural areas.
Artistic Methods
Creative approaches such as music, movement, visual arts, and theatre used as tools for self-expression, collaboration, exploration, and social engagement in youth work settings.
Inclusive Practices
Approaches, methods, and strategies used in youth work to actively ensure that all young people, especially those facing barriers, can access, participate in, and benefit from activities. This includes adapting content, communication, environments, and facilitation styles to meet diverse needs and promote equal participation.
Needs Analysis
A process of assessing the interests, challenges, strengths, and specific needs of a group in order to design relevant and effective activities and learning experiences.
Safe and Brave Space
A supportive environment where participants feel physically and emotionally secure (safe space) while also being encouraged to step out of their comfort zone, experiment, and express themselves (brave space).
Trauma-Informed Approach
A facilitation approach that recognizes that participants may have experienced trauma and therefore prioritizes emotional safety, choice, predictability, and sensitivity to potential triggers.
Process-Oriented Learning
An approach that focuses on exploration, collaboration, and personal development rather than on producing a perfect final product. The emphasis is on participation and experience rather than performance.
Accessibility
The practice of removing physical, emotional, linguistic, and social barriers so that activities, materials, and spaces can be used by everyone, including people with disabilities or other specific needs.
Cultural Sensitivity
An awareness of and respect for different cultural backgrounds, communication styles, and social norms, ensuring that activities and language are inclusive and free from assumptions or stereotypes.
